Kayak Surfing Techniques 01 - Movie

Edge control and a good paddlers box are critical for surfing success on whitewater rivers.

This little diagonal wave was deceptively tricky. Dropping the upstream edge of the kayak was needed to stay on the wave, but if the edge was dropped too far the current was powerful enough to dunk you in an instant. Notice how I kept my arms extended in a good paddlers box and my paddle was kept low to the deck of my kayak. Leaning back was needed to keep the bow of the kayak on the surface. My paddling technique was a little casual and sloppy with a little too much elbow bending.
