Publicize your blog or website via outgoing hyperlinks.

Linking out to webpages that rank highly for important keywords helps your site to earn high search engine ranks for those keywords. The old dogma that only incoming hyperlinks help your website's search engine ranks and all outgoing hyperlinks hurt your ranks is no longer true. Many webmasters and site owners who are stuck in the past remain unwilling or afraid to make outgoing links from their sites. This is a self-defeating strategy because modern search engines reward websites that make outgoing hyperlinks to high-quality, relevant resources on other websites. If you want your webpage to rank highly for some keywords it helps you if you make keyword-rich outgoing hyperlinks to other websites that rank highly for your favorite keywords.

Websites are publicity tools to advertise your information to an audience. Just posting some stuff on some website is not the final goal. We need help from the search engines to bring the audience to read our websites. Strategic use of hyperlinks is critical to the success of all blogs and other websites. Making keyword-rich outgoing hyperlinks to other relevant websites is an important factor that helps your website to earn high ranks at the search engines. Only then will the search engines send the audience traffic that you need to read your website.

There is no such thing as "free publicity" on the Internet. Throwing up your stuff on your website is meaningless if nobody ever comes to read it. Search engine optimization (SEO) skills are needed if you want your website to succeed. Reader traffic only comes to website owners who invest the time, SEO skill and energy necessary to get good ranks at the search engines. Your website needs a good strategy for building incoming and outgoing hyperlinks if you want high ranks and a good traffic of readers visiting your site.

When the news media do not tell you all you want to know on your topic(s) of interest, then you can find more news on the Internet.

I read a big city newspaper and watch (too much!!) cable TV news, but these sources are not providing me with enough information specifically about water in California. Water issues are so critical for whitewater boating recreation, and also for everyday living, working and paying taxes in California.

Here are the newsfeeds that I am reading to provide a greater knowledge base for my blogging about river conservation and water policy issues in California. This gives me long lists of news headlines and lets me selectively read whatever articles my time and interests permit. Some of you may be interested in these newsfeeds and others may be interested in going to the online news sources to find other newsfeeds on different topics. Newsfeeds are provided for free with advertisements on the pages. Newsfeeds are dynamically updated to provide up-to-the-minute news that is not limited by the delivery schedule of your newspaper or the broadcast schedule of TV news.

Newspapers.

Major newspapers typically provide dozens of newsfeeds on a wide range of topics. California newspapers that provide newsfeeds include Sacramento Bee, San Francisco Chronicle, Stockton Record, Red Bluff Daily News, Marysville Appeal Democrat, and Los Angeles Times.

I am currently reading the following newspaper feeds: Sacbee - Environment, LA Times - Environment, Stockton Record - Environment, Stockton Record - Agriculture.

Search Engines.

Search engines like Google News and Yahoo News provide newsfeeds for any keyword search that interests you. These contain news from newspapers and many other sites on the Internet.

I am currently reading search engine newsfeeds for keyword combinations including: peripheral canal, delta conveyance, river restoration California, California water, river California, Klamath River, California Delta, and San Joaquin River.

Blogs.

All blogs provide newsfeeds. Many of the sites listed in my River News Sources are blogs and I'm realizing that I don't visit these individual websites as often as I should. I'm hoping that picking out the very best of the water politics blogs and subscribing to their newsfeeds will help me to keep better informed about what they have to say. I subscribe to the newsfeeds from blogs written by some of my kayaking buddies. I also subscribe to the newsfeeds from my personal sites to keep an eye on how my content is displayed via the feeds.


It is quick and easy to subscribe to the newsfeeds that interest you. I'll write more about that in a future post.

• brthomas6's Channel - YouTube. (subscribe to my channel) This channel contains some short video clips that illustrate the fun of river kayaking and the beauty of the river canyons. I'm planning to add more videos that illustrate the basic skills for performance and safety while kayaking on whitewater rivers. YouTube does not provide newsfeeds, but they do have an internal system that allows people to subscribe to channels that interest them.

• Favorite WW Kayaking blogs. (newsfeed) On this site I combine the feeds for some of my favorite whitewater river kayaking blogs from a wide variety of authors. I rate blogs on a variety of factors including the quality of their content, relevance from my California-centered perspective, and on their Google PageRank. There are many ww kayaking blogs, but only a few have combined consistently good quality content with the publicity necessary to get good ranks at Google.

• Water policy in California.(newsfeed)
On this site I am including only the water-related articles from California Progress Report and filtering out the articles on many other topics that this site covers. In the future I may expand this newsfeed to include water-related articles from other California news media or blog sites.


• River Conservation - BRT Insights. (newsfeed)
On this site I am including only the river conservation and water policy articles from my BRT Insights - Whitewater Kayaking and filtering out the recreation-related articles.

Blogs about human-powered whitewater river boating are ranked by their Google PageRanks (scale from 0 to 10). I know of 15 sea kayaking blogs that have achieved PageRanks of 4 or 5, so whitewater river bloggers are definitely lagging behind in this area.

Comments contributed by readers are essential to the blogging community experience. Some websites built using blogging software which do not enable reader comments are not included in this directory. Blogs that are dormant for many months will be removed from the list.

Everybody can contribute their knowlege using Web 2.0 online services.

New online services simplify use of the Internet to tell the story of your business or some part of your personal life. There are many blogging services and photo/video sharing communities online. These are typically designed to be very easy for anybody with basic computer skills to use. They are also designed to be highly interactive, so others can add comments, questions and critiques to things that somebody else has posted online. Join the discussion. Add your thoughts and your ideas to the online world !!

Blogger, Picasa & YouTube are great web 2.0 tools for storytelling and photo/video sharing.

I've had good experiences with my free accounts at Blogger, Picasa Web Albums and YouTube, online services owned by Google. These web 2.0 services work together very nicely. For example, my pictures posted at Picasa and my videos posted at YouTube can be easily inserted into posts for my blog at Blogger (photo slideshow and video). Please add your comments to my blog and my online pictures.

1. Click on the comments link at the end of the blog post on which you want to comment.

2. When commenting on a trip in which you participated please focus on your own experiences and your own observations on the trip. Let other people from the trip tell as much or as little of their own experiences as they choose.

3. Keywords. Be sure to use keywords (whitewater, river, kayaking, paddling, boating), hiking, trail, etc. as often as possible in your comments. Frequent use of these keywords helps the search engines to classify your comments in the right category in their online databases.

4. Write for an international audience. Readers located far away will not know many things that local boaters & hikers take for granted. People who paddle other types of boats may not know many terms common to river kayakers.

5. Remember that your comments will be on the Internet for a long time, so don't write anything that you may regret later.

6. Please explain in detail and don't abbreviate. Search engines don't like abbreviations so spell out river and creek, rather than abbreviate as r and ck. Not everybody knows that:
a. CA is the abbreviation for California
b. SF American is a RIVER
c. Meatgrinder is a RAPID
d. RPM and EasyG are KAYAKS

7. Type or copy/paste your comment into the "Leave your comment" box on the right. Please sign your post with your first name and last initial. If the comment is lengthy you may want to keep a copy of your comment on your computer as a text file in case your comment needs to be resubmitted.

8. Choose an identity. You can quickly get a free Blogger identity if you want, but Anonymous identity is even easier and faster.

9. Type the string of funny letters into the word verification box.

10. Click the preview button if you want to preview.

11. Click the Login and Publish button.

12. After a successful submission you should see "Your comment has been saved and will be visible after blog owner approval."

13. This blog is setup for comment moderation. I review all visitor comments before they appear on the blog. Inappropriate or off-topic comments will be rejected. Inappropriate or off-topic hyperlinks will definitely cause a comment to be rejected! In some cases I may ask a visitor to edit and resubmit a comment If I have a way to contact the person. Although the blog is a hobby topic it is important that the blog maintains high standards.

14. I need to log in to do the comment moderation, so your comments will appear on the blog within a few days.

15. Why Post a Comment on BRT Kayaking Blog.

1. Blogging is designed to facilitate an online group discussion. Don't be just a passive reader. PLEASE participate by adding your thoughts and knowledge into the discussion !!

2. Trip reports will be far more interesting and worthwhile if all trip participants contribute their own unique observations, perspectives and experiences into the record. What did you see? What did you do? What were you thinking?

3. Planning to write a report helps encourage me to observe better and remember more while the trip is in progress. Writing about it afterwards extends the joy the trip.

4. Observe deeply, widely and in multiple dimensions. There are many things that can be interesting in a trip report: whitewater info, trip logistics, human antics, wildlife, geology, weather, etc.

5. Ask a question. Contribute additional information. Express your disagreement. Restate or clarify something that was not thoroughly described. Etc.

6. I hope that this blog will grow into a good instructional resource for whitewater kayakers & hikers, a source of up-to-date information about California whitewater and boating equipment, and a way to keep in touch with boating & hiking friends who can't join in on every trip.

Publicise Your Blog - 5 Comments and Discussion.

Blogs are meant to be tools for discussion and community building. Everything you do to encourage online discussion about your blog helps the publicity effort for your blog. Many blogs began as a way to communicate with friends, but once you have done all that work why not do things in the best possible way and talk with a much larger community of people who share your interests?

Comments on Your Blog.

Ask, beg or bribe your friends to make relevant comments on your blog that include lots of keyword-rich text. Your blog gains higher rankings in the search engines if it contains more pages of keyword-rich text content and these comment pages count just as much as the pages written by the blog author. (see previous post - blog publicity via keywords).

Comments on other Blogs and Discussion Boards.

Your comments on other relevant blogs and discussion boards should always include an active hyperlink back to your blog. Links back to your blog from highly ranked, relevant blog or discussion sites are more valuable to you than links from lower ranking sites, but a number of links coming from a wide variety of relevant sites on the Internet is also valuable. Use a variety of keyword-rich link texts when constructing these hyperlinks back to your blog. Many of these links should point to the home page of your blog, but hyperlinks to other pages within your blog can also be valuable especially if the link text contains the specific keywords discussed on those other pages. Newsfeed Basics - 3 Reading Multiple Newsfeeds

The previous article in this series described various systems for reading selected individual newsfeeds in a central location. This article describes various systems that gather news from a multitude of sources together in a single location, providing convenient access to the most current content on a particular topic of interest.

Technorati Tags

Technorati Tags enable keyword search results of the blogosphere to be read directly in your web browser. Each search provides the most relevant and current content from millions of blog sites. Saving a favorite or bookmark will enable frequently repeated searches to be done easily.

Feedster

Feedster enables searches for keywords at millions of blog, news, and podcast sites. Subscribing to a particular keyword search makes it easy to read content updates in any newsfeed reader system (aggregator).

Newsburst

Newsburst collects the content that interests you, including news, weather, blogs, alerts, search results, cartoons, shopping lists, price notifications and other content from all around the Web. This new content is gathered together in one place for easy and rapid reading.

Google News

After searching for your favorite keyword in Google News you get in the left column some links for subscribing to that search result as an RSS or Atom newsfeed. This makes it easy to read content updates in any newsfeed reader system (aggregator).

Google Blog Search

Google Blog Search also provides handy links for subscribing to an Atom or RSS newsfeed so that the same search can be easily repeated later and read via any newsfeed reading system. Bookmark one of these newsfeed links for later viewing of updates in the Sage/Firefox system.
