Hydroelectric is not a clean, green power source
After years of assuming that hydroelectricity provided clean, green power I was surprised to learn that reservoirs are a source of global warming pollution. Patrick McCully recently wrote a San Francisco Chronicle article and a Sacramento Bee article describing how vegetation that washes into a reservoir produces methane and other greenhouse gases when it decays. Additional information is available at International Rivers Network. This provides another reason to oppose construction of dams & reservoirs and support conservation of our rivers and streams. Unfortunately, it also complicates the questions about how to preserve the environment while getting the energy we need for our modern society.
