Hiking at Deer Creek Hills
The hike began under cool and somewhat windy conditions with a clear blue sky. As the day progressed it warmed up, the wind died down and we got some nice feathery clouds in the sky. I used my homemade sports energy drink to stay hydrated while hiking. The trail took us up a branch of Crevis Creek past Oxbow Pond (vernal pool) to North Pond, looping back via a more easterly trail. Along the way we learned about the Salt Springs Slate - rocks with layers turned almost vertical that make very unique outcroppings at various places along the trail. Our large group was joined by a number of docents, so we also learned a lot about the human history of the area and the natural history of some plants and animals in the area. Throughout the day we saw lots of raptors soaring overhead including a bald eagle and some turkey vultures.Doubleclick on the photos to see the large size image - use the back button to return.

On the way home
We stopped for a midafternoon bite to eat at Magpie Cafe (1409 R Street #102 Sacramento, CA 95811). I got a pulled pork sandwich that was quite excellent. One of their specialities is a potato salad made with purple potatoes. At first glance it looked like a sponge that was used to clean up some spilled paint, but once you took a bite the taste was great. These purple potatoes have greater nutritional value than the typical white potato because the purple pigment acts as an antioxidant.Additional information:

Many California State Parks at risk for closure
Will this spring be our last chance to hike the trails at many of these parks?
"Want to run a state park? With the California Department of Parks and Recreation facing the prospect of having to cut $22 million from the coming year's budget, the agency is looking seriously at finding people and groups to take over the operation – or at least the funding – of parks slated for closure." (Workshops set for group interested in running state parks - Sacramento Bee 12feb2012 )"Slowly but surely, nonprofits and local communities are exploring what they can do to keep open the 70 state parks slated to close on July 1. So far, 10 parks have been removed from the closure list. The latest is a gem in our region, the South Yuba River State Park, with a lovely canyon and covered bridge, near Grass Valley." (School kids show the state why parks should be open to all - Sacramento Bee 12feb2012 )

Open Space hiking, Solano County, California
.
JimH, OliverH, Royce & I did some Open Space hiking in Solano County with one of the local Smallfoot clan (not so distant relative of Bigfoot). What started out as a quick, local hike before the Super Bowl football game unexpectedly turned into a photography extravaganza!! Big, old oak trees silouetted against dramatic cloudy skies produced incredible photo opportunities!!

We stopped as usual at Betty Lou's Bar & Grill to get some dinner and watch the Super Bowl. We got the dark beer sampler with spicy ribs and "more than you can eat" of the chips and guacamole special. Too much good stuff!!For more information:
