I enjoy your IK blog and had a gear advice question for you. I'm looking to pick up some cold-weather protective clothing so can run Class II rivers around Sac in the spring snowmelt (N. Fork American, Bear River, etc) and possibly in winter. I can't afford a drysuit. Have you ever used a Farmer John-splash jacket combo,
and if so do you think I could get away with a 3 mm NRS Farmer John or do I have to go 4-5 mm for water temps in 40s-50s?

I started out in winter kayaking with a Farmer John wetsuit and a drytop. Wetsuit booties, good gloves, a rubberized hat, a metal thermos of hot chocolate and I was good to go. I did a lot of flipping and rolling and some occasional swimming during my class II period. The drytop & wetsuit combo allowed me to kayak on the coldest days and kept me warm enough despite my many paddling mistakes.

Replacing the drytop with a splash jacket will provide considerably less protection. This may or may not work for you depending upon your paddling skills at staying upright and the river flow and weather conditions that you go out in.
