Schoolhouse Rapid & Playspot was described in "Canoer's Guide to the Wild and Scenic Middle Klamath River." (pg. 63). According to Jefferson State Creeking 06aug2006 optimum flows for playboating at Schoolhouse are 700 - 1150 cfs. JSC also posted many dynamic photos of kayak playboaters getting schooled at Schoolhouse Playspot!

Whitewater paddleboating runs on the wild & scenic Carson River. Be prepared for cold water and cold air on this high elevation run with nearby snowy mountaintops often in view. The elevation at Hangman's Bridge is 5500 feet. Also beware the many hazardous dams & barbed wire fences built across the river & creeks in the Carson River watershed. It is illegal to build barbed wire fences across navigable streams. Some boaters portage these deadly fence hazards, while others bring wire cutters.

Whitewater Boating Runs on Carson River, Silver Creek, Hot Springs Creek, Pleasant Valley Creek, Markleeville Creek - locations of put-ins and take-outs.

These locations are estimated from guidebooks and trip reports. Many alternate river access points are available. Always use your best judgement to choose safe & legal put-ins and take-outs.

Describes access points along the middle section of the Klamath River, Siskiyou County, California USA.

"Find your spot with our easy-to-use guide. Includes river map and complete descriptions of both developed and undeveloped river accesses - from the posted to the local favorites. Plus a listing of area services and resources, and historical notes." This booklet gives very brief descriptions of 67 river access points on the middle Klamath River from Iron Gate to Weitchpec. It also contains a good list of local resources. Unfortunately the brief descriptions are often too brief. The booklet contains a large area map, but no detailed maps of the individual access points. Campsites are described, but there is no practical information about how to reserve a campsite (if that is even necessary or possible to do). Some places are closed for the "winter," but no dates are given to specify exactly when that is. This little booklet provides a little information at a little price, but not enough of anything to be very useful. I rate this book as poor (* 1 star out of 5).

Marquis Playspot was mentioned in "California Whitewater - A Guide to the Rivers" (pg. 237). Jefferson State Creeking 17july2006 reported that optimum flows for playboating at Marquis are 1,300 - 1,500 cfs and provided some excellent photos of kayak playboaters having fun there.

From California's Big Sur River to the Rogue River in southern Oregon, this book is the original printed whitewater guide for many of these coastal rivers, including some good ones that have not been described in any subsequent river guidebook. Disclaimer.

Dick Schwind wrote on page 3: "A word of caution - this guide or any such guide should be considered only as a convenience for planning trips. It is not a substitute for skill. I have tried to point out the most challenging rapids in almost every run and to transmit a feel for each section of the river, so that the reader can judge whether the run is appropriate for his group. Probably one-third of the time you will find something in the river - a tree, snag, or unnoted rapid - that provides more challenge than any of the rapids or obstacles I have described here. River beds can change with flood waters, and even low flows will cause changes over many years' time."

Rating.

"West Coast River Touring" is an excellent guidebook for boaters interested in paddling on coastal whitewater rivers and creeks from central California to southern Oregon. More recent and more detailed descriptions have been published for many of these rivers, but this book remains a very valuable resource for whitewater boaters. I rate this book as great (**** 4 stars out of 5).
